Home Silhouette Journeys - ongoing from May 2009 Royal Brompton Hospital Jennie Pedley

Silhouette Journeys is a permanent installation at Royal Brompton Hospital – a leading centre for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and lung disease. Jennie has created a series of backlit photographs, featuring shadow figures travelling on magical journeys. Working with Royal Brompton & Harefield Arts assisted by photographer Heather McDonough, Jennie visited people with cystic fibrosis and chronic pulmonary lung disease. In Jennie’s transformations of hospital routines and physiotherapy sessions, the hospital beds become clouds and medical tubing supports the exploration of outer space and ocean depths. Printed onto transparent film and acrylic, the stories inhabit the elegant 19th century central stairwell of one of the largest respiratory unit in Europe. They reflect the life of the hospital while adding an anarchic sense of playfulness and freedom to the environment. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life-threatening inherited disease; the necessity for sophisticated medical treatment can make this specialist hospital seem like a second home to the patients. Silhouette Journeys has been funded by Royal Brompton & Harefield Charitable Fund, the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Nurses’ Fund at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust, and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
