Home Idyll Jennie Pedley
This is a playful exhibition of cut-out paper figures, performing exercises in miniature stage sets. Inspired by historical exercise manuals from the Wellcome Trust library, Jennie made videos of herself struggling to carry out old fashioned exercises, including swinging Indian clubs and clambering backwards up and down ladders. Using the video images, she created tiny self-portraits and placed them in dioramas, reinterpreting the eighteenth century illustrations. Influenced by pop-up books, Jennie has made work that allows the viewer to slide tabs to move pictures inside the frames. Alongside these are shown sequences of photos of the artist exercising as well as stills from her animations and copies of the original exercise manual illustrations, courtesy of the Wellcome Trust library, London. Idyll was exhibited at The Royal London Hospital in the summer of 2007, thanks to Vital Arts. Research and production was funded by a Wellcome Trust Peoples Award.
