"a is for ageing" is an installation of four shadow films they are the result of a commission from Newcastle University for Coming of Age - The Art and Science of Ageing. The films can be seen below or on vimeo. Jennie also exhibited a series of layered prints, sections of which can be seen above. Jennie made several visits to Newcastle to meet with scientists at the Institute for Ageing and Health. During these visits she filmed staff at the Institute in silhouette as they performed tasks associated with their research.
"Jennie’s filming has covered a number of research area, above are examples of images from the laboratory work with Dr Glyn Nelson and Dr Satomi Miwa. Also shown are details of the routines of her own elderly relatives, capturing domestic situations which are familiar to us all. Filmed through a semitransparent backlit screen, the moving silhouettes perform their activities with seductive precision, punctuated by glowing colours and reflections. Changes of scale draw us into the mysterious activities taking place inside the ageing body itself. She has explored a rich terrain of ageing related research and this has led to a vibrant collection of new work."
Music for "a is for ageing" is by Quinta.
